What is the Trinacria?
The Trinacria, a three legged design resembling a triskele, is a symbol of the “Isle of Sicily.” The three points represent the three capes of Sicily, also known as the “Trinacria.” The Trinacria is also found on the Flag of Sicily. The gorgon in the center implies the protection of the Goddess Athena, the Patron Goddess of the Isle.
One of the most ancient stories is that of “The three nymphs.” Long ago, three nymphs danced all over the world. They stopped where nature was most luxuriant and collected lovely stones, juicy pieces of fruit and handfuls of fertile soil.
One day they reached a region with a wonderful clear blue sky that they fell in love with and their dance became even more graceful. They decided to throw the best of everything that they had collected around the planet into the sea.
Quickly, the water began to glow and produced an incredible rainbow. From the waves a new land surfaced that was splendid, fragrant, and colorful.
The new island had the shape of a triangle and the magnificent island of Sicily was born.
